Member Story - A Journey of Fitness and Community through Squash
At Colets, we are excited to be celebrating Women’s Squash Week from Monday 16th September to Sunday 22nd September 2024. This global initiative aims to encourage more women to get involved in squash, whether you’re completely new to the sport or looking to reignite your passion for the game. To mark this special occasion, we’re sharing the story from one of our female members who have discovered the joy and benefits of squash.
Susie has been a long-time member of Colets Health & Fitness and recently found her love for squash after exploring various parts of the club. Her story shows how trying something new can lead to unexpected fitness journeys, personal growth, and becoming a part of a vibrant community.
How did you get into playing squash?
Having been a member of Colets for many years, squash was the one area of the club I had never tried, mostly because I didn’t think it was for me. When Colets reopened after the Covid closures, Neal hosted a beginners and ladies evening, and I’m SO glad I went along and gave it a go. I became hooked from the moment I stepped on court.
Squash has been a great way to stay fit and has introduced me to a wonderful new community to be a part of. I don’t even realise I’m exercising when playing squash! I love doing something where I can make progress and feel improvements in my game and my confidence.
What is your favourite thing about the squash community or the social aspect of the sport?
The squash community at Colets, created by Neal, Ruudi, and the squash team, is incredibly supportive and welcoming to all levels. I always look forward to playing, not just for the sport but for the social side too.
I had always assumed it was only for those looking for serious, competitive matches but it can be whatever you make it - a fun way to run around, a great stress relief, competition with the internal/external leagues or a way to meet new people - and all are as valid as each other!
What tips would you give someone who is thinking about trying squash for the first time?
If you are tempted to try it out, I’d highly encourage you to borrow a racket and come to a club morning/evening or contact Neal to book in an intro session/connect with other squash players!
If you’re trying squash for the first time my advice would be to stay open minded and remember you’re not expected to know what you’re doing straight away – that’s all part of the fun!
