Meet Keaton - A Squash Superstar
This month, we’re shining a spotlight on one of our inspiring junior members - Keaton! He’s sharing his squash journey so far, along with the support of his family, who are all active members of Colets.
Walk into the squash courts in the afternoon, and you might spot a blur of movement, energy, and focus - that’s Keaton. At just 9 years old, he’s already a familiar face in the squash scene, balancing fun with fierce determination as he trains, competes, and grows through every match.
When did Keaton first start playing squash?
Keaton’s squash journey began at just 3 years old, playing for fun with his dad and sister. His passion for the sport grew when he met fellow member David Clark, who invited him to join Saturday group sessions. Enjoying the sessions, Keaton soon began taking lessons with Neal here at Colets. Since then, his love for the game has continued to grow - he's improving every day and feels like he's getting better and better.
What is Keaton’s favourite thing about squash?
His favourite thing about squash is the creativity the sport allows him to explore. He enjoys the clever shot selection and unpredictable plays. For Keaton, it’s not just about winning points - it’s about the fun and satisfaction that comes from being inventive and strategic in every game.
What is Keaton up to on the squash scene?
Keaton loves training at Colets because it’s a fun, comfortable and friendly place, as if it was his second home. He likes learning new things from his coach Neal, who helps him improve whilst still making the lessons exciting.
Outside of Colets, Keaton also loves playing at Nottingham University, but his favourite place he’s played a match is Surbiton. That’s where he competed in the Intercounties tournament with the Surrey Under 11s team, making it all the way to the finals!
It’s a family thing
Keaton’s whole family are members of Colets, and they all enjoy using the facilities together - whether it’s playing squash, table tennis, or going swimming with his mum.
Keaton is also looking forward to trying out the gym soon… if his dad lets him! But for now, he mostly plays squash with his dad, who used to give him a real challenge - but Keaton is quickly learning his dad’s tricks!
He also has a fun (and very competitive!) squash rivalry with his sister. Their matches usually end with her saying she won… and Keaton being sure that he actually did!
What is Keaton’s favourite shots?
Keaton’s favourite squash shots are the tricky and fun ones! He loves trying a crosscourt nick - even though it can be really challenging to pull off. He also enjoys playing shots through his legs or behind his back, and even doing a windmill swing. Keaton likes the challenge of these creative moves, and especially loves that they’re crowd-pleasers.
What advice can Keaton give?
Keaton’s advice for beginners just starting out in squash is to not overthink it - just go for it and have fun! He says to think of it as hitting a bouncy rubber ball around a rectangle-shaped court. One of his top tips is for the forehand shot: imagine you’re skimming a stone across water - that motion really helps!
Squash in 3 words:
If Keaton could describe squash in 3 words it would be exciting, fun and artistic.
