New to Squash?

If you are brand-new to squash or returning after a long break we recommend booking a free, 30-minute 1-1 session with one of our coaching team. During the session, we will teach or refresh you on the rules and then explain how squash at Colets works. For new and existing members only.

NEAL BROOKER

  • I'm a lifelong sports fanatic who played football, cricket, and golf competitively. I started playing squash socially at Cheam Squash Club in my mid-teens. In university, I studied Sport Development and Coaching, excelling in squash and achieving a First Class Honours Degree.

After university, I competed professionally on the PSA World Tour, reaching a career high ranking of 255 and traveling to various countries, including Australia. In 2014, I transitioned to full-time coaching, obtaining the Level 3 England Squash Coaching Award and Personal Training qualification.

Throughout my coaching career, I have worked with players of all ages and levels, including a professional player with two PSA world tour titles and a ranking of 88. I have also coached on the national junior pathway for England Squash and worked closely with county-level junior players.

Currently, I am the Head of Squash & Racketball at Colets, dedicated to providing a program for everyone to excel in both sports.

  • I have been representing the club for the 1st team in the top division of Surrey cup (one of the strongest squash leagues in the world) for the last 3 Seasons competing against many world ranked players, having worked my way up from first playing in the 6th team at aged 13.

Squash is a sport where I believe any level of player can enjoy the game from complete beginner to seasoned team player all are welcome on court. The process of practising and playing and then seeing improvement is one of the most rewarding things you can experience and as a coach it is what I enjoy the most.

Even if you’ve never stepped on court before I can guarantee by the end of a session you will have had a great amount of fun and probably pushed yourself harder physically than you would’ve ever thought possible beforehand!

Through coaching every level and age group, I have found that when you’ve had fun and managed to learn something in the process you won’t be able to stay off court long and as you improve the game only gets more enjoyable!

No matter what age or ability there is a space for you in the Colets squash community and I’m always happy to provide coaching to cater to any person who is keen to try!

GEORGE MILLER

  • I first picked up a squash racket at the age of 8 through the junior programme here at Colets, where my passion for the sport quickly grew. Since then, I’ve gone on to compete in sanctioned events and represent Surrey at county level. After completing my A-levels, I spent part of my gap year in Canada on a ski season before returning to the club to further develop my coaching.

I completed my England Squash Level 2 qualification in November and am now looking to take on a more active role within the club by leading various participation programmes and offering 1-to-1 coaching sessions. I’m committed to improving both as a player and coach and always eager to keep learning and supporting others on their squash journey.

JOE BIRTWISTLE

  • I started playing squash at age 16 at Lee-on-the-Solent Tennis Club. After a break, I joined Colets in September 2017 as a staff member. Interacting with members there turned my hobby into a passion, leading me to assist with media for the Colets 1st Team.

During the club's closure due to the pandemic, I saw the thriving junior program and decided to pursue my Level 1 certification. In April of this year, I achieved that goal and joined the coaching team.

I have always been obsessed with fitness and sports, particularly football. I had trials at Southampton FC and played at Fratton Park stadium. Now, I play for the Old Paulines' 1st Team on Saturdays. I also enjoy movies, books, and music on my days off.

Why Warming Up Matters in Squash

Before you step onto the court, taking just a few minutes to warm up properly can make all the difference - not just to your performance, but also to your long-term health.

This video walks you through three essential elements of an effective squash warm-up:

🔹 Pulse Raiser - Get your heart rate up with light cardio to ensure your muscles are warm and ready to move.

🔹 Mobility - Loosen up the joints and increase your range of motion with dynamic stretches that prepare your body for quick, multi-directional movement.

🔹 Ghosting - Practise your footwork and visualise game play with this squash-specific drill that helps sharpen reactions and technique.

A good warm-up helps prevent injury, and gets you mentally and physically in the zone. Watch the video and try it out before your next match - your body will thank you!
