The ethos of VC Colets can probably be best summed up as ‘a social club with an emphasis on good group cycling skills’. Safe & effective cycling within a tight group is a skill that all abilities of cyclist can learn, develop and improve; it is not tied to fitness, so it is an accessible means of improving as a cyclist.
The main activity of VC Colets is the weekly Club Run, which takes place every Sunday morning. There are usually 3 or 4 groups heading out for a 3-4 hour ride into the Surrey Hills.
In addition to the weekly club ride they also have a Summer Series of midweek evening rides (from May through to August), as well as an annual weekend residential in Wales and an annual Brighton ride.
There are a couple of ‘socials’ each year too, such as the Annual Dinner & Awards and a Christmas get together for drinks.
Read our VC Colets Spring 2022 Newsletter.
Our weekly Club Ride takes place every Sunday morning.
We assemble at 08:45 in the Colets main car park (though prior to that many of us meet up in the Colets Café) before heading out for a 3–4 hour ride, usually into the Surrey Hills.
We aim to be back for around 12:30, but please allow 30 minutes either side of that time.
Through December – February we assemble in the rear car park at 09:15, in order to allow temperatures to rise a little; but we still aim to be back by about 12:30.
PLEASE arrive on time.
Depending on turnout we generally have anywhere from two to four groups each week to suit various abilities.
No one likes rules as such but they are necessary in order to try and ensure that everyone has as good an experience as possible, so we ask that everyone conversant with our ride guide.
From time to time it may be deemed necessary to call off the road ride due to poor or unsafe conditions. We are fortunate to have been granted access to Colets’ Indoor Cycle Studio for such occasions, which means VC Colets never has to cancel a ride!
The club kit is exclusive to members of VC Colets who may purchase it once they have joined and have been on a few club rides.
Not only is the design stylish and eye catching but it is of pro-peloton quality, being made Sportful’s Bodyfit range, which was developed exclusively for the Tinkoff pro team.
The main items of club kit are shown below.
We find that this range of items, when combined and supplemented with a couple of different gauges of base layer, along with a set of arm & knee warmers, covers you for pretty much all year round cycling.
All prospective new members are required to attend one of our ‘New Members Rides before joining. These rides are held (subject to demand) on a monthly basis. You do need to pre-book onto one of these by contacting the VC Colets membership secretary Chris Dain.
If you are already a road cyclist with experience of cycling in an organised group, you do not necessarily need to attend a New Members ride, though still contact Chris to express your interest in joining VC Colets.
On the New Members ride you will cycle with the ‘Steady Group’. If you are able to ride with them all the way round then you will be welcome to join VC Colets. If however, you are off the pace so much that one of the Ride Captains needs to extract you from the group to guide you back home you will need to try again in a minimum of two months time once your bike fitness has improved.
As a rough guide if you can do three laps of Richmond Park in under 80 minutes then you should be ok to ride with the steady group.
Membership of VC Colets is FREE. To join you must either already be a member of Colets Health & Fitness OR take out annual Social Membership of Colets Health & Fitness (which costs just £40 per year).
You must be aged 18 or over to join VC Colets.
