Recently we caught up with one of our relatively newer members, Steve Knowles who joined us on New Year’s Day 2018.
Nearing his 50th birthday, Steve decided that it was time for him to make what was in his eyes, an important change to his lifestyle and begin to get more active.
In his university days, Steve was a keen swimmer and regular squash player, however when he moved to London to train as an accountant, his spare time became very limited and so he struggled to maintain his activity levels. After a few years, Steve, together with a friend, signed up to their local Holmes Place and very quickly, his love for fitness returned. Using the gym two to three times per week and frequently spinning, Steve really noticed the difference. However, as Steve’s career path changed and he moved into some quite large project-management roles, he found it much tougher to keep to a routine. Much of his work took him away from home for months at a time and being absorbed in busy projects resulted in Steve becoming much more sedentary and began to notice his weight creeping up.
This time last year, Steve, now self-employed and able to work from home, began to research local health clubs and fortunately for us, he chose Colets. With (a little) more time on his hands, Steve was determined to fit exercise back into his weekly routine and in his own words, described how important being both fitter and healthier were to him as he entered middle-age. In addition to being a short drive away, Steve loved our 25 metre pool and the fact that we had squash courts. He was also attracted to the club as Colets is not part of a large chain.
12 months on and Steve has really noticed the difference. At the beginning of his membership, he completed our free, eight-week Get Fit Stay Fit programme which set him up perfectly with goals to achieve. He has also taken advantage of the regular programme review sessions which are offered as part of our membership and has found the boditrax machine (which arrived this time last year) incredibly useful. Steve has found the team of instructors incredibly friendly and helpful. He also spoke about the newly installed cardiovascular kit and how motivational he has found the new technology.
Though Steve initially joined on his own, he has since added his wife and children to his membership. His son James loves the Junior Gym sessions with Dan and like his father, a keen squash player, is really enjoying the Junior Coaching with Neal Brooker. Whilst James is taking part in the squash sessions, Steve regularly swims and recently completed a pool challenge – something which he also finds useful to motivate him.
Steve describes Colets as the best gym he has ever been a member of (please note we did not in any way force him to say this!). What makes Colets stand out for Steve is the warm and welcoming ambience and the personal touch. Steve’s commitment to being active this past year has clearly paid dividends – well done Steve and we look forward to catching up with you in 2019!
