Colets: A Year In Review

Dec 27, 2019 |

With 2019 all but over, we would like to share a few of our favourite highlights with you. In what has been another busy year for the club there are almost too many to include however below is just a little summary of what we’ve been up to…

We kicked off the year in style with a whopping 60%  increase in our mind and body classes whilst our younger members were enjoying our Junior Team’s first ever NERF birthday party. As always, we helped plenty of members both new and old set about their New Year fitness plans – we hope you’ve all kept it up!

February saw the introduction of “Sit and Get Fit”, our great new chair-based class.  As we all battled the seasonal colds & flus, our Food & Beverage team created and handed out hundreds of delicious “Healthy Shots” every day to help give our immune systems a useful boost. With an ever increasing need for all ages to be able to unwind, February also saw the introduction of our junior and teen yoga classes.

In March, with Junior Squash going from strength to strength, Neal Brooker developed our very first Junior Squash Clinic to help take our promising young squash stars to the next level.

With our members enjoying more classes than ever, it was the turn of our staff. Caroline Taylor, Fitness and Wellness Manager designed and ran a new weekly Pilates & Wellness class just for the Colets’ team – thank you Caroline – we are also now feeling fitter, happier and healthier too (well, most of us!).

April saw the annual National Squash Club Finals and Colets’ four teams were all aiming to be crowned National Champions. While our Men’s, Ladies’ and Over 45s came very close, it was however our Over 55s who came back to Thames Ditton with the top prize as they retained their title – congratulations guys! Our cycling club, VC Colets paid a visit to a Veledrome – quite a change to the scenery of the Surrey Hills.

We kept up the pace in May with Stefan running his magnificent “Grand Tour” series. Members were able to join the peleton as together they took on some of the toughest climbs from the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and La Vuelta…”chapeau” to all that took part. May was also a busy month on the squash courts as our Club Tournaments reached Finals Night. Congratulations to all of our 2019 champions.

June saw our first Colets’ triathlon which was a very successful event, raising money  for our nominated local charity,  Momentum Children’s Charity. We also took to the sports field ourselves as our inaugral “Staff vs Staff” cricket match took place. A great evening by all that took part and well done to Rodney who top scored!

Now…what happened in July? Oh yeah, your health club was named as “The Best Club in Surrey” as voted for by readers of Elmbridge magazine. Thank you so much to everyone that voted for us…2020 voting is now open by the way!

August  was of course the month of one of our biggest events, our Family Fun Day and our very own Charlie got married and became Mrs Raynsford. With the club being at its quietest over the Summer, many of you were enjoying our ever-popular 6-Week Summer Membership.

September was a busy month in the kitchen as we launched our brand-new Servery Menu which has proven super-popular. We also launched our Buddy Programme and with Junior Squash continuing to build in popularity, our Junior Academy was launched by Neal.

October is of course Halloween and our younger members were looking Spooktacular (sorry!) at our Halloween party. We also celebrated World Squash Day plus, our keen cyclists enjoyed the beginning of a new indoor racing series.

Already almost a couple of months ago, November saw us host our traditional Family Fireworks and this year must have been one of our best ever displays! We had some brilliant news too as Rob Clarke announced his engagement…congratulations Rob!

Finally, December has been as busy as ever. Our Festive 12-Day Pass made its return whilst on the social side, our adult & junior members enjoyed their Christmas Parties as did the staff…apologies if we were slightly jaded the day after! Christmas also saw the return of our “Giving Tree” as we asked staff and members to buy one extra present for Momentum Children’s Charity – a big thank you to all that donated. 2019 was a busy one on the wedding front as Dan Brown celebrated his special day – huge congratulations Dan!

We would like to thank all the members that made 2019 a year to remember as this couldn’t have been possible without all of you. We look forward to seeing you in 2020 for an even better year.

Why I Play Racquetball.

Apr 22, 2020 | Nick Andrews

In October 2019, I played my first racquetball match at Surrey Closed Tournament and I thoroughly enjoyed it, despite not really knowing what I was doing! Since then I have played 3-4 times per month and I feel it has had a positive impact on my squash performance. Below are some observations I have made
