Meet The Member – Chris Murray of VC Colets

Chris first came to Colets in 2010 as a fairly inactive guy looking to get into some kind of shape and lose his “middle-age spread”! (Wording courtesy of Chris himself!).

Some seven years later you are most likely to find Chris on a bike – either attending a group cycling class, working out using our Wattbikes or somewhere in the Surrey Hills leading our very own cycling club, VC Colets.

Chris Murray of VC Colets

It’s fair to say that the past seven years have been quite a transformation for Chris. Back in 2010, Chris started his new fitness regime by trying out as many classes as he could, as he preferred the idea of exercising as part of a group. One class that particularly stood out for Chris was group cycling and in June 2013 Chris  (with some persuasion) signed up to take part in the Capital To Coast ride from London to Brighton along with other Colets’ members.

Nervous about the challenge ahead, Chris stepped up his training, attending as many group cycle classes as possible and began to put in the miles outside on his rusty old mountain bike. His training paid off, the 60-mile plus ride was completed far easier than anticipated and it was from this point Chris’ love of cycling returned; his first memories of an affection towards cycling were back in the 1980’s watching the Tour De France on ITVs World of Sport as well as being the only kid amongst his group of friends to have a ‘racer’ as opposed to a BMX.
Fast-forward to 2017 and Chris now finds himself running the cycling club, together with Colets’ member of staff Stefan.  The club was formed in 2013 and right from the off he was heavily involved in co-running the club and was solely responsible for keeping it going during its first winter soon after. A year on from there both he and Stefan found themselves at the helm.

Chris’ unreserved energy and passion for cycling has helped to transform Colets’ cycling club beyond all recognition over a very short space of time. With Chris at the helm ‘Team Colets’, as it was initially called, was re-branded as VC Colets, a moniker far more appropriate for a cycling club.  The club kit was redesigned and it has to be said is the envy of many other cycling clubs up & down the country. Chris recently found out that the VC Colets kit is an ‘office favourite’ at Sportful HQ in Italy. Sportful supply our kit, as well as that to Pro-Peloton teams Trek-Segafredo and Bahrain-Merida.

The club now has almost 60 members and a very active schedule including regular Sunday morning rides, an annual Brighton ride, as well as an annual weekend trip to Wales. During 2015 Stefan also became the first member of the club to compete in a Surrey League race and is now scoring points and achieving hard fought podium finishes.

Just a few days before we spoke to Chris he had completed a 275km ride – something he would never have dreamt possible when he first walked though Colets’ doors several years ago. Chris looks forward to gradually growing the cycling club over the coming year, but is keen to keep the club’s ethos of being a social cycling club with an emphasis on good group riding skills.

More information on VC Colets can be found via their own website http://bc-clubs.co.uk/vccolets/   – if you are considering joining then why not contact Chris and find out when the next “new member” ride is taking place.
